Having been in the wine industry for over 10 years, it has always amazed me that just about everyone in the Western Cape has some connection or other to the winelands.  Whether they live on a wine farm, own a wine farm, or knows someone who works at a wine farm, or even has parents that have shares in wine farms……there is a connection.

This gives them access to wines, and all my friends drink wine or some style or another.  What amazes me even more, is that so many people who drink wine are embarrassed about their lack of knowledge about wine.  Just because you know people, does not mean that you know their business.  It would be like expecting me to understand banking because my friends are working for ABSA.

So the idea behind this blog is to allow everyone and anyone that knows someone in the wine industry, to learn the basics and beyond on wine.  We will start with cultivars, and what they taste like, and what you should be finding in a wine when looking for the style you like, and even finding a style you like.

For those of you that don’t understand what I mean about a “style of wine”, here it is:  a style of wine is described as a ‘dry’ wine, a semi-sweet wine, a red or white wine, a wine with a lightness to it or perhaps you enjoy a ‘heavier’ style of wine, perhaps something with wood in it.  The style could be New World or Old World Style.  For more on this, see the first blog post.

Please feel free to ask about wine, and what you want to know, and I will help you by posting information to satisfy you thirst!
